Press Samples

I am honored to be one of the Bloggers of the month for Polish Pickup for September. This is like the best birthday present ever, me being a September baby! Enough about me, you are here to see some sexy swatches of participating makers for Horror Movies some of the inspirations have made me research them and some have brought back memories.

If by chance you aren’t acquainted with The Polish Pickup (PPU) it is a monthly collection where makers have a theme picked for them by the facebook group and they create custom polishes to match the theme. Upwards of 90+ indie makers participate and create polish and non-polish products. The group has grown so much that they now have a separate line of business called The Indie Pickup for all non-polish items, check them out here.

Grab some coffee and start making your lists, let’s start the Swatch ABC’s

6 Harts|Slowly it Swings
INSPIRATION: The Pit and the Pendulum
Price $10.00 |CAP:75
DESCRIPTION: Near black crelly accented with blues and golds

Slowly it Swings is a beautiful blackened holo crelly that can be worn in one coat as a barely there transparent black look or in 3 coats for a squishy black sparkler. I am wearing 3 coats and dries to a semi matte finish.

Slowly it Swings was inspired by the 1961 Vincent Price movie which was shot in black and white, giving Slowly it Swings its color and formulation.

Alter Ego | Saturdays Are For Sven
INSPIRATION: Svengoolie, Chicago horror movie host
Price $8.00 |CAP: None
DESCRIPTION: black base with micro holo red glitter & micro metallic yellow flakies

Sven applied smooth and even in 3 coats, though it’s a black base it does present itself as a brown, the glitters give it a beautiful shimmer effect. Sven dries to a semi matte finish and is slightly textured, you may need a second coat of topcoat.

Anchor & Heart | Pale Man
INSPIRATION: Pan’s Labyrinth
Price $12.00 |CAP: None
DESCRIPTION: a nude holo crelly with darker UCC flakies.

Pale Man is a beautiful Nude Crelly, gold shimmers and dark UCC flakes give you the feeling you are seeing his long clay like fingers. Pale Man reaches full opacity in 3 coats, but can be worn as a topper over darker colors to play off that golden shimmer.

The formula was smooth and needed just a little time to dry between coats. This polish dries to a semi glossy finish but I recommend a glossy or matte top coat.

B-Polished |Bad Ideas
Price $12.00 |CAP: 200
DESCRIPTION: a vibrant turquoise blue shimmer with red/orange/gold UCC flakes that is opaque in 2 coats.

Dead Space is actually a Video Game in the Horror Genre, but maker Francine still finds it scary. The color scheme came from the color of the characters internal light rays used to defend themselves. Bad Ideas is a stunning teal that reaches full opacity in 2 coats and dries to a semi matte finish, like the characters this color also has a glowing blue shimmer that comes from within.

Baroness X |Crypt Keeper
INSPIRATION: The host, a corpse puppet, in the TV show Tales from the Crypt.
PRICE $16.00 |CAP: 300
DESCRIPTION: a green olive with gold/green/blue UP sister pigment, blue glass flakies and UCC Flakies

Crypt Keeper is a character I know well from my late nights watching Tales from the Crypt, the puppet always had this look like it was melting! This Crypt Keeper wont look like it’s melting on your nails and honestly you will not stop staring at it. The flakies, the shimmer it’s like a pond of sparkle. This color is perfect for Fall just add some orange nail art or stamping and you’ll have a great mani!

I used 3 coats of Crypt Keeper on my swatches and found the formula to be smooth & even and it dried to a semi matte finish.

Baroness X |The Essence of Greenery – Acetone Antidote
INSPIRATION: Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
PRICE $4.50 |CAP: None
DESCRIPTION:Essence of Greenery is a blend of mac apples and a bushel of greenery and a touch of citrus (green leaves, arugula, cyclamen, basil, key lime and bergamot).

Inspired by one of the opening scenes in “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer”. In this scene young Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, who was born with a superior olfactory sense, is taking his first whiffs of twigs, leaves and a green apple tree.

Acetone Antidote is an additive containing glycerin and jojoba oil to help protect and moisturize your nails, skin, and cuticles during polish removal.
Recommended Use: Add the entire vial to 6-8 oz of acetone. You can add more or less, these are just suggestions for optimal scent and protection from acetone.

Bee’s Knees Lacquer |Valak
EFFECT: Magnetic | Price $15.00 |CAP: 200
DESCRIPTION: Black polish with indigo to blue UP sibling pigment and peach to lime green magnetic multichrome microflakes

Sarah has become the master of the Multichrome magnetic! I literally woke my napping husband by yelling ‘Yes!’ when I saw how this magnetized. The way the polish mimics the inspiration poster is uncanny and creepy as fuck!

I used 2 coats with my swatches and I needed no undie, so that means this baby is highly pigmented! As with all magnetics be sure to use the magnet over every wet coat of polish for 30 seconds to make sure the effects stays.

In my swatches I show Valak magnetized and not for your viewing pleasure.

Blacklace Cosmetics | Time to take your medicine
Price $11.50 |CAP: 75
DESCRIPTION: A seafoam/teal polish with little copper and bronze flakes to it

Take your medicine is a stunning teal blue just think of those little blue boxes out there! I never saw Dr. Giggles, but the color palette was inspired by the Doctor scrubs from the 90’s and 80’s and I never thought I would appreciate that color more than on my nails!

I used 2 coats for my swatches, but most can get away with just one coat it’s that pigmented! The finish was smooth and semi matte.

Blue-Eyed Girl Lacquer | Excellent day for an Exorcism
The Exorcist
Price $13.00 |CAP: 150
DESCRIPTION: Greige with copper to green aurora shift, good shimmer, and gold (nonmetallic) flakes

Excellent day for an exorcism is a greige scattered holographic with green and gold sparking shimmers, gold microflakies, and red to gold to green aurora shifting shimmer. This polish is so pigmented most will get away with just one coat, I used 2 coats and a top coat. Excellent…dries to a matte finish and it’s gorgeous matted.

Bluebird Lacquer | Polly Want a Carcass
The Birds, Hitchock
EFFECT: Thermal | Price $12.00 |CAP: 200
DESCRIPTION: An olive-green to black thermal packed with red-gold-orange-green ultrachrome flakies and faux unicorn pee.

Bluebird Lacquer brings us killer birds! This olive thermal definitely screams fall, I love how it transitions and shimmers all at the same time. Polly is highly pigmented and will cover in 2 coats, some short nails sisters might get away with just one and it dried to a beautiful glossy finish.

I recommend a good base coat with this one as with all highly pigmented polishes. I had a bit of staining on my skin, but not my nails.

Blush Lacquer |Life Finds A Way
INSPIRATION: Jurassic Park
Price $13.00 |CAP: None
DESCRIPTION: A deep, murky mud brown with a shifting green-teal-blue-purple microflake shimmer.

The inspiration for Life Finds a Way is Jurassic park more particular the image of the T-Rex’s footprint in the mud. This polish is a beautiful brown base with a strong green teal shift under light and a blue/purple in low light.

This color is not your average muddy brown, I would love to mention here that this is my second Blush and I love love love the brush on this brand! It’s so easy to work with, just thought I’d mention that!

Bohemian Polish |Sink into the Floor
Price $11.00 |CAP: None
DESCRIPTION:  A black jelly packed with an assortment of blue glitters, from metallic to holo to matte. It’s a squishy polish perfect for clawing your way out of the Sunken Place.

Sink Into The Floor was inspired by this scene in Get Out, when Missy tells Chris to sink into the floor. This jelly is jam-packed with blue glitters and applies in 2-3 coats depending on nail length, I used 3 and dries to a semi glossy and smooth finish. It is just as squishy as Jen describes with a coat of QDTC. I need to try this one sponged on cause I’m sure you will get a hella lot of glitters on.

Cameo Colours Lacquers | They’re Here
INSPIRATION: Poltergeist
EFFECT: Glow in the Dark | Price $11.50 | CAP: None
DESCRIPTION: Medium ultramarine blue jelly, full of electric blue, navy, and silver holo micro flakes, black holo microglitter, a hint of shimmer, and a haunting glow once the lights go out.

Applied beautifully in 2 coats, dries with a bit of texture will need 2 coats of top coat or a non uv gel topper. This is a glow in the dark and highly black light reactive, all shots were taken after a 30 seconds under black light with a gorgeous blue glow to mimic the inspiration shot of the ominous tv glow in the movie Poltergeist. Though it’s just as reactive under normal lighting and glows a stunning white in the dark.

Chaotic Glitz | Prepare to Face the Butcher Baker
INSPIRATION Gingerdead Man
EFFECT: Thermal | Price 12.50 | CAP: 100
DESCRIPTION: A deep brown thermal and changes to a deep red/burgundy and scattered holo.

I’ve never seen Gingerdead man, but I am in love with this killer gingerbread man! This is my first time trying Chaotic Glitz and I will say I love the formula, first it’s a dream to put on and it dried to a hella glossy finish! I used 3 coats for full opacity and absolutely loved the subtle transition of Burgundy Red (Hot) to Ginger Brown (Cold).  Every bottle of face the butcher baker will come with a killer gingy helmer sticker that matches the bottle sticker.

Chirality Polish | No Tears, Please
COLOR Blue/Black
PRICE $11.00 | CAP: None
DESCRIPTION: A dark cenobite blue base with denim and navy shimmer, sparkles of aqua and midnight blue, and dark blue micro flakies.

No tears… reminds me of pinhead’s leather exoskeleton trench which is the inspiration behind the polish itself. No tears… reaches full opacity in 2-3 coats most will only need 2 coats and dries to a semi matte finish.

Colores de Carol | Don’t Look Behind You
EFFECT: Thermal | PRICE $11.50 | CAP: None
DESCRIPTION: a black to clear thermal polish with silver glitter.

Nosferatu is a 1920’s Black and White silent film based of the Brahm Stoker’s Dracula Novel, Don’t look Behind You captures the changes of not just black and white but the transition of Night to Day. This Thermal is a black base with tons of silver and black glitter and UCC flakes that make the base look dark brown. In its cold state it is this dark (night) look and as it warms up it transitions to a clear exposing just how much glitter is in there. For a change-up to this thermal you can “liven” things up, by using different colors and applying Don’t look behind you over it.

I used 3 coats on my swatches because I have long nails, I run hot and forgot if I covered an area! Don’t look behind you dries to a matte finish and will also look great with a matte topcoat.

Colors by Llarowe | Bad Seed
Price $11.50 | CAP: None
DESCRIPTION: Deep navy blue base with red to gold shimmer, Aurora purple to copper to green shimmer and prismatic holo flake.

Bad Seed is inspired by the 1951 movie where the villain is the pigtail preteen who terrorizes every one. Don’t stand too close to a dock around this one. Bad Seed is a blackened base with a purple and blue shift and chock full of silver flakies.

It is fully opaque in one coat for most, I used two coats and it dries to a matte finish. I recommend a thick coat of top coat for this one if you are going glossy.

Contrary Polish | If you play with fire
Price $12.00 |CAP: None
DESCRIPTION: It is a dark cobalt blue with color-shifting shimmer (pink-orange-gold-green), color-shifting flakes (orange-gold and gold-green), red-gold shifting microglitter, and holo microflakes.

Carrie is one of my all time favorite scary movies! This is one of those movies I don’t get scared by, but remember how they shaped me to “do unto others as…” If you didn’t know the owner of Contrary Polish is named Carrie so I think she’s trying to tell us something with her choice of inspiration! LOL!

This color is absolutely a dream to work with, you can reach full opacity in 1-2 coats and dries to a semi matte finish, I probably could have just done 1 coat, but I’m neurotic and yada yada yada. The shifting flakes in this totally capture the inspo pick of the glitter background with Carrie covered in blood.

Creative Cuticles Nail Polish | Blaze of Gory
INSPIRATION: The Devil’s Rejects
Price $10.00 |CAP: 100
DESCRIPTION: A dusty blue crelly with gold shimmer & holo red flakes

As soon as I saw the inspo photo and the name of this polish I immediately started singing ‘Blaze of Glory’ by Bon Jovi in my head. This polish captured the inspiration photo perfectly, it depicts Baby, Roy and Otis blood smeared driving in a baby blue Eldorado Convertible.

Blaze applied smoothly, evenly and dried to a semi glossy finish. It reached full opacity in 2 coats.

CrowsToes Nail Color | Bitch on Wheels
INSPIRATION: Stephen King & John Carpenter’s CHRISTINE
Price $12.00 | CAP: None
DESCRIPTION: factory red for the 58 Plymouth Fury paint color, with chrome/silver elements

So, I love that CrowsToes did Christine! Christine has been the name of 3 of my cars in my life! I had Christine, Old Christine and New Christine…I’ve stopped calling my cars Christine!

Bitch on Wheels applies beautifully in 2 coats and Laurie worked very hard to get this polish to match the original paint job of the car as the base and chrome and silver holo scattered make this polish such a pretty Bitch!

Crystal Knockout |Heart of the Witch
PRICE $13.00|CAP: 160
DESCRIPTION: A grayish-blue base with scattered and linear holo, shifts of purple and gold, red-gold aurora, violet and gold iridescent shimmer, holo micro flakies, and iridescent blue flakes.

I loved watching the Craft growing up and I think that Crystal Knockout really embraced the inspiration, Heart of a Witch was brought forth by the image of the quartet walking in a rainstorm giving it, its grayish base and shimmers represented by the splashing water.

Heart… applied beautifully in 2 coats it dries semi glossy and with a little bit of texture, but a nice coat of QDTC made everything smooth.

Cuticula |‘Trick’ Salted Carmel Scented Base Coat & ‘Treat’ Green Apple Candy
INSPIRATION: Trick r Treat
PRICE (Sold as a Duo) $15.00 |CAP: None
DESCRIPTION: ‘Trick’ Salted Carmel Scented Base Coat – The sweet and salty aroma of gooey salted caramel. You get a choice between Silk and Static!

Treat’ Green Apple Candy – Sweet tart and perfect for fall this green apple candy has it all.

Layering these 2 scents will give the most amazing smell of those caramel apple pops that we all know and love. You get that amazing, not at all too powerful salted caramel aroma while smelling the green apple candy on top. I’ve been craving a Carmel apple for 2 days now!

Cuticula |’Carmel Apple Pops’ Cloud Cover Matte Top Coat
INSPIRATION: Trick r Treat
PRICE $8.50 |CAP: None
DESCRIPTION: This already has the two scents above combined and smells so so delish and absolutely perfect for fall.

The cloud cover does take about 5-10 minutes to completely mattify.

The scent on all three of these is incredible, I used the base and the top coat and the scent lasted through handwashings, showers, dishes and nail oil, 2 days and it still smells great. This isn’t overpowering scent you can only smell it if you search for it (By putting your nails to your nose), but it’s lingering.
